Plans for September

Plans for September

I am writing with a brief update on where we currently stand with school re-opening plans for the new school year.

The Government have announced that all schools will be open “with full attendance” from September. As of yet, we have no accompanying information or guidance to share with you as to how this will be implemented. The government should publish guidance this week. We will be ready for that guidance and will work to it. In the meantime, I wanted to give you some interim indication of our thinking.

The clearest message to all parents and children is to assume that the new school term will start as usual in September and to make your usual ‘back to school’ preparations including uniform and equipment.

Over the next few days, year teams will be getting in touch to discuss how things are and to give you the chance to ask any questions you may have about what the return will look like in the autumn.

One thing to consider around the return in September is how we, as a school, will provide lunches if the need for social distancing or current cleaning regimes remain. It would be useful for us to know, through your conversations with the staff who contact you, how you feel about your child bringing a packed lunch to school. With this in mind, I would ask you to discuss this with your child and decide whether your child will bring a packed lunch to help minimise contact between students in the event of a September start “with full attendance”

Prior to the lockdown the plan was for all children to return on Monday 7th September at 8.30am. Although we still intend to be welcoming children back on this day it seems likely that the original plan will need some adaptation.

One consideration is, despite a very thorough ‘virtual’ induction programme, we have not been able to give our New Year 7 cohort any time actually in school. On the 7th September, we may only open for this Year 7 cohort to allow them one day to acclimatise without a full complement of 800 other children in school. This approach also has the advantage of allowing one day to test all the safety systems with only 160 children on-site. If we do decide to take this approach all other year groups will return on the 8th September, however, this may be at staggered times.

I fully understand how difficult these months have been for families and thank you for your patience and support. I am optimistic that we can look forward to a healthy and positive school year from September. I am, and I am sure you are too, desperate for a return to normality.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding school please contact your child’s tutor, teacher or Achievement Leader.

Yours Sincerely

Mr C Woollard
